Gesa Stedman was born in England and lives and works in Berlin. She has always been interested in crossing social, cultural, and geographical borders.
She works across different media, including painting, drawing, collage paper sculpture and zines/graphic novels. Her work uses black and white or vibrant colours in different techniques to move people to think critically about the impact of the past on the present, or to visualise sensory impressions. She often finds inspiration for her art work in research projects. She has just completed a series entitled “Objects of Soft Power: The Diplomat’s Bag”, which takes objects inherited from her Canadian-British grandfather as a starting point to explore imperial violence. As curator and participant artist, she is currently putting the finishing touches to her works for the group exhibition “Uncomfortable Truths – Art, Colonialism, and Academic Collections”, 5-16 October 2026, Lichthof Ost, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
